![]() Here, Old Crow Medicine Show feel focused and fully realized, as if they're just hitting their stride after two decades in the business. Nothing here is particularly outside the wheelhouse of Old Crow Medicine Show, but the songs are finely etched and the performances vivid, elements that separate Volunteer from its predecessors. Travel is an undercurrent throughout Volunteer - there are plenty of songs about touring and returning home after weeks away - which plays into how the album feels like it's in constant motion as it swings from high-octane fiddle tunes to plaintive ballads. Old Crow Medicine Show's final version was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America in April 2013. 2 Dylan recorded the chorus in 1973 Secor added verses 25 years later. That much is clear from "Flicker & Shine," a steamroller of a tune that sets the tone for Volunteer: it's vivid and immediate, benefiting from the group's years on the road. Wagon Wheel (song) ' Wagon Wheel ' is a song co-written by Bob Dylan and Ketch Secor of Old Crow Medicine Show. Cobb doesn't push Old Crow in any uncomfortable directions - the twanging electric guitar that underpins "Dixie Avenue" amounts to nothing much more than a splash of color - but he is able to harness the energy of their live show, which is no small accomplishment. Teaming with producer Dave Cobb, the hottest producer in Nashville in 2018, Old Crow Medicine Show broaden their sonic palette without abandoning their devotion to old-timey string music. In contrast, Volunteer, released nearly a year to the day after 50 Years of Blonde on Blonde, is a splashy beginning to a new phase in the band's career. It was an appropriate way to begin the relationship - Old Crow had their breakthrough when they completed Dylan's half-written "Wagon Wheel" in 2004, so this felt like a debt being paid - but it also was a low-key way to move to a major label. Old Crow Medicine Show’s new album Remedy is the first album the string band has released since officially minting a 1 song in the form of Darius Rucker’s take on Wagon Wheel, and the first as the freshest members of the prestigious Grand Ole Opry. "Wolfman of the Ozarks" and "Keel Over and Die" are whiplash bluegrass numbers, "I Want It Now" is rollicking blues boogie and they're all eclipsed by the vaudevillian shuffle "Shit Kicked In." Despite the preponderance of lighter tunes, the heart of the record lies in "Miles Away," a bittersweet reminiscence Secor co-wrote with Molly Tuttle and sings with Willie Watson, a founding Old Crow Medicine Show member who left years ago whose presence gives the song deep emotional resonance.Old Crow Medicine Show signed to Columbia in 2017 and immediately delivered a raucous full-length tribute to Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde to the label. Sierra Ferrell stops by for "Belle Meade Cockfight," a cornpone saga that might be the silliest moment on the record but hardly the only moment of outright humor. ![]() To that end, Old Crow invites a number of guests into the studio, chief among them soul legend Mavis Staples, who helps give the rousing "One Drop" a spiritual lift. ![]() Old Crow Medicine Show hasn't left heavier social issues behind yet the emphasis is how a joyful noise is the thread that connects people of different backgrounds. Purposefully ragged, the record switches between wistful ballads and careening rave-ups, occasionally lingering in the spaces separating the two. Where Ketch Secor had Old Crow Medicine Show tackle politically timely concerns on Paint This Town, Jubilee focuses on universal themes, drawing on a variety of American folk traditions and singing about subjects old as time: love, loss, mending fences, and getting messed up. Swiftly following on the heels of Paint This Town, Jubilee effectively acts as a simultaneous continuation and counterpoint to that 2022 album.
